Convolution didn't start with modern AI; it has deep mathematical and engineering roots.

In the 1800s, Joseph Fourier introduced the idea that any signal can be broken into simple waves. This led to understanding exactly how differing signals interact with each other.

  • Kernel: The functional filter, acting as a small overlay matrix (like 3x3).

The kernel systematically moves and slides across the input space. At every step, it multiplies corresponding overlapping values, adds them all together, and produces a single output value representing that specific local region.

  • The Top Signal: This represents your raw input data array. Each index equals intensity.
  • The Middle Output Filter: Observe how the array weights are flipped, and mathematically slid down the active timeline.
  • Calculation Phase: The system grabs the localized overlaps. All active overlaps multiply simultaneously, merge into an equation, and execute a sum sequence.
  • The Lower Sequence: Each computed mathematical output generates exactly one physical bar inside the final array dimension.
